The Reality

"Errands became dangerous missions. I was anxious at every corner. I was afraid I'd meet someone I knew because he'd question me afterwards. I knew he was watching me and timing my outings. At one point, he wouldn't even let me go out to buy groceries. He said I never got the right deal, that it was my fault that the bill was more and more expensive. I ended up avoiding going out."

The Signs

Isolation, monitoring and blaming
are all examples of coercive control

Why is this Coercive Control?

  • 01

    Constant control

He uses a series of strategies to isolate her and control her comings and goings. He makes her live in a constant climate of fear.

  • 02

    Self-censorship

Ultimately, she prefers not to go out anymore. This way, she thinks she can prevent him from blaming her, questioning her and shouting at her.

  • 03

    Deprivation and economic violence

He deprives her of her freedom and her right to decide for herself. By trying to reduce the grocery bill at all costs, he's committing economic violence.
