The Reality

"Every time he saw me take the pill, he'd fly into a rage. He kept telling me that it was against my beliefs, that life is sacred and that I would pay for it one day. I not only felt like a bad mother, but I also felt like I was betraying my religion. When my baby was born, he told the children that I had never wanted their little brother. He decided to punish me. He shouted at me when I was breastfeeding, spilt the milk that had taken me an hour to pump and forced me to pick it up."

The Signs

Controlling contraception, humiliating and using beliefs
are all examples of coercive control

Why is this Coercive Control?

  • 01

    Manipulating her beliefs

He uses her beliefs to make her feel guilty, dissuade her from using contraceptive methods, and force her to have another child against her wishes.

  • 02

    Retaliation

He retaliates against her to bring her back under control and humiliate her.

  • 03

    Impact on children

He criticizes and belittles his partner in front of their children. This can damage the mother-child relationship. Children may reject or be alienated from their mother.
